Share the Road in Haliburton County
The Share the Road campaign was initiated as a result of recommendations made in the 2008 Cycling Master Plan for Haliburton County. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (Transportation Demand Management Program) made funding available to 10 communities in the province of Ontario. The County of Haliburton in partnership with the Haliburton Highlands Cycling Coalition, Communities in Action Committee, Health Unit and all four municipalities, has completed implementation of the project.
The goals met by the project include:
· Increase knowledge in motorists and cyclists about how to safely share the road;
· Increase awareness in the general community about sharing the road with cyclists;
· Increase cyclists’ skills in order to safely share the road
The objectives of the project were achieved through a variety of activities including:
· Installation of Share the Road signs;
· Extensive public information campaign;
· Promotion and support for the annual Commuter Challenge
The Share the Road project recognizes that both motorists and cyclists play important roles in making our roads safer for everyone. The U-Links Centre for Community Based Research participated in the Share the Road campaign by offering support for evaluation of the campaign through an online survey. The survey garnered over 200 responses and provided feedback on the success of the campaign initiatives; along with recommendations for future opportunities. A final report will be released providing an overview of the campaign, its implementation and highlighting the findings of the survey.
