Research

Community-Based Research:

  • Is conducted by, with, or for communities. (Sclove et al, 1998)
  • Has a substantial level of community participation for the purposes of community improvement and social change. (Loka Institute, 2002)
  • Puts the issues and questions of community organizations and the communities they serve at the centre of research. (Marchand, R. 2001)
  • Is not a research method but it is an approach to doing research. (Narciso, L 2003)

Essentially, it is where research meets community development, and where research becomes a tool of community development.

What types of research are eligible?

CBR projects are expected to expand knowledge about or contribute to the social, cultural, environmental, and/or economic development of Haliburton County and contain a substantial analytical component that merits academic credit at a university level. Proposals for research projects are invited from the community, and U-Links staff work with the host organization to develop the proposal into a research project that is suitable for a student to take on.

Past projects have investigated research questions that were historical, scientific, social, economic, and environmental in nature.
